Prince William and Kate Middleton's Royal Wedding

Prince William and Kate Middleton could be one of first couples to have Fairtrade gold wedding ring
The ethically sourced precious metal is launched today in a landmark victory for Third World miners.

It aims to prevent poverty-stricken workers being ripped off by unscrupulous dealers.

Wills and Kate have already broken with convention by opting for a relatively low-key ceremony by royal standards.

Now Fairtrade miners are hoping the couple will seal their love on April 29 with bands made from their gold.

Top jewellers Garrard, who made the sapphire and diamond engagement ring for Princess Diana that Kate is now wearing.

Traditionally the rings for all major royal weddings since the Queen Mother’s marriage in 1923 have been made of Welsh gold from the Clogau St David’s mine in Snowdonia.

One suggestion is that the honorable rings could be a blend of Welsh and Fairtrade gold.
Stephen Webster, Garrard’s creative director is one of 20 certified UK Fairtrade jewellers. He said: “It would be wonderful if Prince William and Kate agreed to it.”

He is launching a bridal range with prices starting at £700 for personalized promise rings made of gold mined in Latin America. The first gold bar under the scheme was unveiled by Bolivian Juana Pena Endara in Hatton Garden, London.

Under the agreement, miners in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru will now get 95% of the London Bullion Market Association’s price instead of the 30% they were being fobbed off with.

Five-times Olympic gold medallist rower Sir Steve Redgrave added: “Fairtrade and Fairmined gold means that everyone is a winner.”

The single mum wept as she revealed how the scheme would change the lives of millions across Latin America who survive on $2 a day. She said: “I didn’t have a job and with four small children to feed, I became a miner. There was nothing else for me.

“It’s very difficult and you don’t get much for your hard work. At last we will be able to get a fair price and families can start to work their way out of poverty.”
