Even the freezing cold couldn’t goout the Lights of Love.

Culpeper Regional Hospital’s 28th annual Lights of Love celebration warmed the hearts of the community wednesday as the event signaled the official start of the holiday season and again proved why Culpeper is such a giving community.

Lights, purchased by residents, lit up the tree outside CRH’s emergency room and served as a beacon of generosity during the holiday season. Proceeds from the purchase of the lights helps fund purchases by hospital auxiliary.

“It’s an excellent way to begin the holiday season and it’s as much about that as it is about the donations,” CRH President and CEO Lee Kirk said. “It’s a way to honor those that are still with us and remember those that aren’t. Our community is very generous with us and we appreciate that stewardship.”

Every year the Culpeper Regional Hospital Auxiliary dedicates the tree to a group at the hospital and this year the emergency department was honored for their service. According to Kirk, the ER saw more than 28,000 patients this year and wait time has been reduced while customer satisfaction has risen.

Joan Proctor, the Lights of Love chairperson, also recognized the good the donations will do for the hospital.

“The money you contributed to these lights will go toward the purchase of a piece of equipment for our new radiology department,” Proctor said. “Each of us has friends and neighbors who travel out of town for radiation treatments. After the first of next year, they won’t have to.”

A crowd of more than 50 people huddled in the cold to see the lights and listen to St. Luke’s Lutheran School’s choir mark ring in the season with Christmas carols.

“It’s the kids,” Kirk said. “Every year we have a very good response from the community. We very much appreciate the support, for as cold as it is, it’s very nice.”
