The Purport of Pinky rings

The Purport of Pinky Rings

Unique Fashion
Unlike other mens signet rings that you can switch between fingers to find the perfect fit, pinky rings require careful sizing. Women with wider fingers do not have a problem, because they can use traditional rings intended for other fingers on their pinkies. However, men with narrow fingers have a tougher time finding a good fit and the generally skimpier styles of chaste pinky rings make them easier to slip off and lose. Some men look for more gender-neutral styles among women's pinky rings to secure a good fit.

Status
Wearing a particular type of pinky ring can also be a mark of status. One such example are tungsten signet rings, which members of a Scottish clan wear on their pinky finger. The symbol on a tungsten stamp ring indicates an individual's rank within the clan.

Allegiances
Because pinky rings are a bit more of a rarity in the fashion world, people may wear them to show allegiance to a group or a society. Such is the case with people who participate in a ceremony known as the Ritual of the Calling of the Engineer. In this ritual, an engineer wears an tungsten carbide ring on her pinky to symbolize pride in the profession but maintaining a humility to serve others.

Accessory
Despite all the speculation, the primary function of a tungsten pinky ring is simple: fashion. A ceramic pinky ring is one of those gender-neutral forms of accessorizing. For men, it can evoke a fashionable tone, or it can look a little mobster or hip hop, with gold and diamonds advertising your net worth. For women, it can be simple and neutral. or it can have some dazzle.

The Meaning of the Pinky Ring

The meaning of the Pinky Ring
A pinky ring is a ring worn on the pinky finger. virginal Pinky rings are not gender-specific, and are commonly found on both men and women. Often there is no special significance associated with wearing a purity pinky ring, other than the typical motivations for wearing jewellery. There are a few exceptions, however: Engineers in Canada and the United States, participants in The Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer and members of the Order of the Engineer wear a tungsten steel or iron ring on the pinky finger on the "strong" hand, and a signet ring is often traditionally worn on the pinky finger.

Lucy wears one. So does fashion maven Gwyneth Paltrow. The shocking pinky ring carries enough mystique to even inspire music, as evidenced by Wu Tang Clan's song "Uzi (Pinky Ring") in which the lyric aligns wearing baby pinky rings with "the legend of masked kid." So what's all the hype about? There are a few stories and urban legends that go around about the significance of the rosa pinky ring.

Many people a way of looking at a left hand ring finger rings sign of relationship-2

When i used to go to bar clubs, it was more common for men to ask first, "are you married?" before they even bothered to know your name (or give you theirs). So we would buy faux engagement rings (never wedding bands, though, they were too frumpy and boring) at department stores, about $100 a ring. (banana republic also makes great faux engagement rings for about half that price, fyi.) It always worked like a charm, because this was a "legit" reason to kindly and graciously diss.

but really, you'll never know the answer until you ask...and as you can see from this thread already, there is just no predictability.
On the other hand... there are married women who  wear titanium wedding rings. I took a first aid class from a married EMT who said she and her husband (also an EMT) didn't wear rings for safety/convenience/sanitary reasons.

But you are aware that plenty of people assume a tungsten ring on the left hand ring finger means you're attached, right? And will assume so until you say otherwise?
Yes, but your comment implied that was why I was wearing the nice tasteful ring. My point was that it's more a side effect of the actual reason I'm wearing the black triton 6mm ring on that finger, not the reason for it.

Not true at all. Many people cannot afford or do not care for big sparkly diamonds. I wear a simple, thick, beat up (the ring is very old) tungsten inset gold ring with an onyx cameo of a Renaissance era soldier and my fiancé wears a thin silver ring with this cool alexandrite stone that changes color depending on the lighting. Diamonds are sparkly, but boring.

My point was that it's more a side effect of the actual reason I'm wearing the black ceramic engraved ring on that finger, not the reason for it.

Yes, TPS, your comment also totally discounts those of us who wear alternative inscribed rings on our left hand so that we can sneak into "Couples Only" swingers' parties. And walk around saying "Oh I've lost my fiancee, poor baby!"

I don't wear my tungsten carbide rings on my left finger because I don't want to be hit on, I wear them there because they don't fit on my right hand.

(And in any event, your "tread carefully" advice is still good. I was just balking at the categorization that wearing my shiny new rings meant I was "either [attached] or did not care to be hit on," since that's not what it actually means. I means I miss my mother, and like wearing her jewelry.)

Many people a way of looking at a left hand ring finger rings sign of relationship-1

Are there any reasons for a female to wear a ring on her left ring finger that would not indicate she is engaged or married? Do females do this often or is that finger strictly for signifying she is in a relationship.

I wear tasteful rings on my left ring finger all the time.

I just like soft red rings. Some members of religious communities wear them, i.e.- Catholic nuns. Nuns don't always wander around in habits, either, as many orders do not require their members to wear them.

I wear tungsten rings on my left ring finger all the time - because it's my skinniest finger (other than my pinky, but ugh) and it's more comfortable to have it on my non-dominant hand (ie The Useless One).

tungsten wedding bands

I often wear the unalloyed tungsten rings I inherited from my mother on my left ring finger, because she had smaller fingers than I do and the bridal rings don't fit my right hand. Though I do hope one day to get them sized so that they'll fit my right hand, because some of them are sparkly-diamondy enough that I feel weird that they look so much like an tungsten carbide engagement ring.

I sometimes see women out that are wearing classic rings on their left ring finger--plain or lightly decorated--that I might like to initiate conversations with the intention of potentially taking out but am unsure whether to be detterred by a stylish ring.

I don't want to be hit on, I wear them there because they don't fit on my right hand.

It means nothing. If it's a big sparkley diamond, then it may indicate engagement. But not even then. A good friend of mine bought herself a tungsten diamond ring when she got a big promotion at work (not sure which finger she wears it on, though).

I know plenty of girls who wear rings on their left ring fingers simply because they think that's where they look best. I don't think the presence of a  elegant simplicity alliance ring is by any means a sure way of telling that a girl's in a relationship, any more than the absence of a triton tungsten ring a sign that she's single.

I had a friend who wore a tungsten wedding band despite not be married (or even enagaged) to keep guys from hitting on her. Pretty girl, just in a Master's program and very busy.

I think that any woman wearing a classic antiques engagement ring on her left hand ring finger is aware that she is sending a signal to the larger population that she is taken (either because she is or because she does not care to be hit on). Tread cautiously until you've heard her say she's single.

Well... except for me. And apparently SassHat. And therefore probably lots of other women. I don't wear my tungsten Claddagh rings on my left finger because loals. retired bar/club scener, but: Me and my friends started doing that about mid/early-twenties for exactly that same reason. It was to discourage boys hovering and trying to hook-up when we just wanted to go out and dance or chill unmolestered.

How to Differentiate Promise Rings and Purity Rings?

Differentiate Promise and Purity Rings

As purity rings and promise rings become more popular, Mary Jo explains what they stand for and how they can be helpful for today's youth. While there are many teens concerned solely with their looks and how many people they can hook up with, there are also teens concerned with remaining committed to one person and what that relationship means for them. Teens that turn to abstinence find inspiration and determination with a symbol that represents this commitment. On a recent nationally broadcasted awards show a few of the artists wore “promise rings” the latest jewelry trend. Many of the teenagers are now asking me what a (tungsten) promise ring or purity ring stands for in order to decide if it is for them.

The two rings are slightly different. The mens promise ring is more indicative of a serious promise you make to yourself and one other person. In most instances the promise ring is given as a romantic token of loyalty and love. Many teens also give them to their best friends as a pledge to be true to that friend forever. Promise rings can also represent a precursor to an tungsten betrothal ring. If this is the case it is worn on the ring finger of the left hand ring.

The symbol purity ring is an oath between yourself and God that you will remain pure until the time of marriage. You may have a significant other or you may not. It is more of a personal promise ring.

Many times the wearer of either ring likes to incorporate “vows” with the placement of the ring. These vows can be such statements as “I will be faithful to you”, “I will return to you”, “I will always be there for you”, or “I will not dishonor you nor myself”. The vow is usually personalized to fit the occasion.

I work with teens in my private practice and as a psychotherapist for a Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas. The teens I work with find a security in these rings . Most teens want a boyfriend or girlfriend that they can take to dances and other social events. I believe promise rings give teens another option in relationships (and a much healthier one) then the alternative. Teens are not yet prepared to face the many consequences that accompany sex. The responsibility for the consequences of sex without a relationship (which many teens engage in) is largely felt by the girl. The girls must deal with pregnancy, STD’s (girls suffer more from STD’s and are receivers much more then givers) and abortions if that is considered. Since girls are the responsible party I believe we need to educate them and give them better options. Purity and promise rings give girls a way to maintain a relationship and keep their sacredness of their bodies.

I recently was on a radio show talking about these rings and the response was incredible. The listeners were boys and girls who were so excited that this was acceptable. They were enthusiastic that celebrities wore them because this eased the peer pressure many of them felt (especially boys). If we are going to preach abstinence we must give teens options. We now know saying “NO” alone does not work. Teens are able to cope with the pressure of saying “NO” when we give them options of other things they could say or do to back up that “NO”.

Purity rings and promise rings are here to stay. If you don’t believe it, start looking at fingers of today’s youth.
